Carl Sagan may have said it best: “We are all made of star stuff.”
The foundation of what we are, even down to our DNA, is something that Sagan believed came from the interior of collapsing stars. These elements are infused in all life on the planet. This gives us a particular connection to the Earth and its energy that is quite unique.
It is also a connection which we have started to ignore.
Our ancestors used to walk barefoot in the grass, live out in nature, and embrace their natural existence. Today, we wear shoes, live inside big buildings, and rarely step outside to “smell the roses.”
Is there any truth to the concept of Earthing? Let’s find out.
What Happens When You Connect Back to the Planet?
There are several scientific studies which show that the concept of Earthing is one that may have numerous physical and mental benefits.
The practice of Earthing helps to provide a balancing effect on the nervous system. This reduces the amount of stress that a person feels, which has a positive impact on heart health.
Going camping, which connects you back to the Earth, allows you to reset your clock, especially if you leave all your electronic devices at home. For many people, they have substituted the connections of social media for the connection that they once had with their planet. At a moment in time when people are so easily and readily able to “connect” on with another we has a human race are reportedly more lonely and hopeless than any other point in history. It is a truly sad joke to see memes (new word) that show two people or groups sitting in the same room silent while they are viewing or texting away on electronic devices. Something to seriously think about.
Spending time being connected to the Earth may also provide improvements in blood circulation, neuropathy, blood pressure, and heart arrhythmias. People with diabetes have experienced symptom improvement.
Try it for yourself. Take off your shoes and socks, then go walking outside in the grass. See what happens.
Can Earthing and Grounding Happen Indoors?
It is projected that by 2050, up to 80% of the world’s population may live in the urban centers of our great cities. This could limit access to Earthing and grounding opportunities, but it does not have to be the case. If you bring the elements of the Earth indoors, you are still able to receive the benefits that come from this activity.
For Earthing to be successful indoors, you must create soil, sand, or grass where barefoot opportunities are possible. It could be a small courtyard or balcony spot. Removing all electronic device from the area helps to create an optimal environment in your chosen location. Then rest your feet (or other parts of your body) against the ground to begin receiving the benefits that are offered. Was there ever a time when you would lay in the grass on your front or back yard and just look up at the clouds, sky, or stars? Do you remember how refreshing it felt?
Some products that are designed to pass electrons to you in a way that is similar to what the planet provides may also be of benefit, but nothing replaces the rejuvenation of being in nature.
There are no pills, supplements, or celebrity treatment plans that will help you begin the process of Earthing. It is something that you must do on your own. You will find that being grounded is not something which happens immediately. It is not a substitute for professional medical care.
What it does provide is an opportunity to unplug, rest, and unwind when the pressures of the day are coming at you. Draw upon the natural energy that is all around you and experience what our ancestors did so long before.
There is a healing power from the Earth that may be waiting for you right now.
